UNITY

feature | MEDIA ARTS and ANIMATION

In this scene from the animation film, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, we see a Christmas dinner celebration as ‘imagined’ by the Grinch.  He imagines not only the Roast Beast and Who-hash, but also the joy and happiness of the Whoville community—he imagines their ‘unity’.  We too can sense their unity in story, but also in design.
Given the Whos are similar in appearance, are in close proximity to one another, and the fact that our eye follows the winding table from foreground to background where it meets the arch of the room and continues back, we too sense the unity present in this scene; we see the entire community of Whos as a whole, before we see them as individuals. The aspects of unity employed in the composition strongly support the storyline; we can see and feel the unity of the Whoville community!
